Teeth Cleaning Houston, TX

Performed by our dental hygienist, a teeth cleaning is a thorough process that involves deep cleansing of the teeth for maintaining good oral hygiene. It also helps prevent many infections caused by the accumulated bacteria present in the corners of our mouth, which are not in the range of a normal toothbrush.

Our dentist at Frank Dunlap, DDS will guide you through the thorough process of our professional Houston dental cleaning.

Why Do You Need a Dental Cleaning?

As it is a process involving deep and thorough cleansing, it prevents a host of additional problems and maintains oral health: it prevents tooth decay, periodontal diseases and gingivitis, and is a part of good oral hygiene.

Since our mouths are known to be the passageway to our bodies, not practicing a good oral care routine can lead to negative consequences, not only affecting our mouths but our overall health as well.

A few health problems that may occur because of bad oral health are cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, dementia, infertility, pregnancy complications, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, cancer, kidney disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Preparing for Teeth Cleaning

Before a cleaning procedure, a physical examination of the mouth is carried out by our dental hygienist. This process consists of the hygienist examining the mouth using a dental mirror. If any infection or problem is detected, the hygienist will inform our dentist, and the problem will be addressed before performing the cleaning.

Steps Involved in Dental Cleaning

After the mouth has been examined, the cleaning procedure begins with the removal of plaque and dental calculus. Plaque is a film that consists of a huge amount of bacteria and hardens to form dental calculus, also known as tartar. The plaque and dental calculus are removed with the help of a dental tool known as a scaler.

After the removal of plaque and tartar, toothpaste cleaning of the teeth is performed. This involves the use of a high-powered electric brush and a dental paste to clean the teeth. This process also cleans up any remnants of tartar from the first step.

After toothpaste cleaning, expert flossing is used to clean any areas between the teeth that may have been missed. Next, the mouth is rinsed with liquid fluoride to clean away any remnants of toothpaste and scaling.

Lastly, a fluoride treatment is done. This treatment is useful against fighting germs and protects the teeth from developing cavities for several months.

How Often Should Teeth Cleaning be Done?

It is recommended to get a dental cleaning procedure done twice a year. The first yearly visit also involves an x-ray step to check if the teeth have any internal problems.

If a problem is detected, it is recommended to get the problem treated. This is a practical step as it allows the dentist to see any problem at an early stage and help prevent it from getting worse.

After getting a cleaning procedure, make sure to brush your teeth twice a day and floss regularly. Avoid smoking and tobacco products, use dental products with fluoride, limit sugary foods, and eat a well-balanced diet to boost dental health.

Dental cleaning is an all-important part of oral care. It helps maintain healthy teeth.
